AstraZeneca has reported positive data for its Nexium (esomeprazole) product, the company said in a statement on Monday.
Nexium is the first in a new class of drug treatments called proton pump inhibitors, which help reduce the production of stomach acid by blocking an enzyme that is needed to make the drug.
The firm said the data was presented on Monday after AstraZeneca presented the results of its study, which found that the company was able to significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, which is the leading cause of death in the UK.
The company said it had received approval from the MHRA and the NHS to market its new product for Nexium.
In December 2012, the company announced a £8.5bn deal with AstraZeneca, its largest rival to Prilosec, to develop an alternative to the blockbuster drug.
But the company has not revealed the deal, which has been due to close in the first half of 2013.
Nexium's sales have been growing steadily since its launch in September, although the company has also announced it is looking for a new product that would work for older drugs that have lost patent protection.
The new Nexium product, which was developed by AstraZeneca, was launched at an average price of £8.20 from £19.99 and will be available on the NHS starting in December 2012.
The company said the results of the Nexium study showed that the company was able to significantly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke, which is the leading cause of death in the UK.
The company said the company was working with the NHS to offer a more affordable alternative, and was looking for a product that would work for older drugs that have lost patent protection.
The new Nexium product is indicated in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease and ulcers, with a price of £8.20 per dose. It is the first Nexium product to be developed by the company, which is based in Cambridge, the UK's largest city and home to the UK's largest population.
The company said it had received approval from the MHRA and the NHS to market its new Nexium.
Nexium (esomeprazole) is an oral antacid formulation designed to relieve symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux by reducing stomach acid production and improving heartburn symptoms. The drug is available in three formulations: delayed release capsule, delayed release delayed release tablet, and immediate release capsule. It works by increasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach, which can help to lower the severity of symptoms such as heartburn and acid reflux.
The Nexium is also indicated in adults and adolescents, with a maximum daily dose of 40mg.
The new Nexium product is currently available on AstraZeneca's website and the company said it was looking for a product that was cheaper and could be more suitable for patients who require more frequent and prolonged treatment.
AstraZeneca said the new Nexium product was a "comprehensive and innovative product" that could be launched in the UK in the future.
Its sales were down 0.1% in Q3 2011 from their pre-launch price of £6.93, up 0.1% from £8.90, and is expected to grow to £12.97 million by the end of 2012.
The Nexium is one of the company's biggest products in its class, with sales of £1.7bn in 2012 and £3.2bn in 2013.
The company's new Nexium product will be developed by AstraZeneca, a global company that has been developing and marketing a range of gastroenterology and gastroenterology medicines.
